3rd week

Third week Sumary(“www: the world-wide web”)
Before we studied this class, professor had mentioned about readings. He said that it is ok that we can’t understand whole readings. It is enough that we can get one idea or thing of readings.
We can number four of key points. It is New media do not replace old media, thy displace them. Meaning(Displace) of this sentence is most important. replace” is that something is there instead of other thing having same functions. However, “displace” is that something is there instead of other thing having little different functions. For example, we can think relationship of between film camera and digital camera. We looked into Burners-lee. He born in UK but he studied for computer science in MIT of USA. He designed network of world(www). People hate to share own research document. However Burners-lee emphasizes the general tendency of world. In a result, CERN, DARPA, INRIA…. are fund www. www is a collaboratively authored hypertext. And it is also a standard(or Language of Network). There are iso, ietf, rfc, w3c. These organization is influenced the www standards. Iso make many international standard.(ex: bolt, nut, machinery, language …). Rfc is manage a request for comments in internet. Communication between CEO and Worker each other is also a request for comments. WWW belongs to the w3c. W3c has no funding of outside. We can join this organization, when we pay $63500/year. It is not commercial. However member of it can learn prior technology of www. We compared http, ftp, smtp, nntp. Http spread hypertext to internet. Ftp is similar web hard but somebody can go in. Smtop is technology of E-mail as Outlook. And www is a vast, heterogeneous network of people and machines. Because so many people use it, there are diffent history, culture … so on. (blog, mini homepage..) And we can see Jevbratt. Jevbratt compared web address from 2001 to 2002. Napier make shredder. He think that when we see a web site, we actually see a harddisk. So shredder shows color related web site.
My opinion
We use www everyday. However I have been not think of www’s origin. Also, I can learn http, ftp, smtp, nntp. And I can learn many organization for standard. I realized importance of standard. WWW’s birth is caused by Burners-lee’s action. World did aware world network but they did not act. I think that thought should not stay thinking, acting is most important.

2nd week

3/21 Summary (“hypertext: as we may write”)
First we have reviewed last class.
And professor has mentioned about media(two key point) one more time.
1. When Technologies connect or separate people, they become media.
2. Technologies embody social, political, cultural, economic and philosophical ideas and relationships.
We thought what does “digital media” mean. Everything can be media. However we can’t define “digital media” by one sentence. It is very complex and broad so we will think it for one semester.
Following are keypoints.
1. When a medium is new, it is often used to simulate old media.
2. New media do not replace old media, they displace them.
Example of number one is desktop PC. Desk has drawer and folders, files. Desktop PC has also folders, files and we use it’s folders, files drawing as drawer of desk. Therefore we can talk that desktop PC(new) simulate desk(old media).
Displacing of number 2 is different from replacing. Displacing is pursue old thing and place the position.
Next, we learned Tristan Tzara’s recipe for composing a poem. It different from composing a nomal poem in method. Few people put word paper in one box and shake it. Next, a man take out a word one by one and place it in a row. It is poem. Surely shaking box can be changed other method. It does not have a order, sequence. We can watch some movies made by it(cut-ups). Hypertext at www is similar to it. Hypertext’s meaning is too vary, because of various context. Meaning of hypertext is floating, not fixed as cut-ups.
Common technologies of the 1960s are hollerith card, batch processing in 1960s. It is batch processing that main computer process all together. Then, Ivan Sutherland’s MIT Dissertation invented the Sketchpad as today’s touchpad.(1963). Engelbart preview domo given to 1000 at the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco with computers and support staff in Menlo Park.(1968) He showed us standard of mouse, keyboard, workstation, E-mail system. He thought about funding. Therefore he consider that personality and persuasion are very important. We can see it through his reporting style and speculative voice of his demo movie. We should to remember dome, the strongest rhetoric in new media. He established input of human and working of computer.

My opinion
I agree that meaning of “digital media” can’t be defined one sentence. Therefore I expect it to searching. Then one example of media (desk) is help me to understand but below it is not understood to me. I know new media above old media but this concept is not. Therefore I am confusing. Then concept of cut-ups is so interesting. I want make short movie by it. Then I thought of ‘method’ one more time. Invention of Engelbart surprise to me because they are so similar today’s input/output device and system. Therefore I realized importance of concept. It is little abstract, it has made today’s whole computer design.
We will learn Ted nelson., Tim burners-lee. I am looking forward to study their concept next class.

1st week

3/12 Summary(“Welcome to the present”)
Technology include idea. We become far off present because of fast development. There are many things we can not see because of high development.(example: nuclear in a cell) However we say “I know that”.
When digital media technologies connect or separate people, they become media. And technologies embody social, political, cultural, economic, philosophical ideas and relationships. Egg white was used in art, when people of past did paint. It was media. Car connect many things. (example : place and other place). Also Car separate many things.(Example : in/out, wealthy/poor) Car is also media.

3/14 Summary(“As We May Think”-Vannevar Bush)
Bush has been MIT professor or inventor of “differential analyzer” or science advisor to President F.D Roosevelt or leader of Manhattan project or founder of NSF. This readings is published Atlantic Monthly in July 1945.
Following is his thought. There are many research. These have been not made by independence. Also These have been involved each other. However method to accept each other is still the first step. And thoughts are so developed. However technology’s growing to realize these is increasing slowly. Economic element can’t reach to thoughts, too. For example, when Babbage design “difference engine”, he could not construct it because of shortage of some money in 1848. so Babbage’s original plan of “difference engine” was constructed in 1991. If Pharaoh were design a car, Egypt will be laborious. And Pharaoh will fail. And Bush thought creative thinking is new thinking based old thinking.
Bush thought that scientist, men, girls, secretaries, calculators will use to Memex. Memex provide user ease to search data by demanding categories. It is similar to information retrieval and index to a book of nowadays. It is same to www’s hyperlink of today. Bush has thought it 60years ago.

My opinion.
All class were so good for me. In fact, I was so confuse at first time because this class is English class and I didn’t know this style class. However I like it now, because of philosophical access of readings.
Specially I could know meaning of media in first class. And I could search media at around me.
And I learned Memex. And I could know advanced thought in the past. It makes part of present. And demands and motivation make invention.
I think I must study very hard. However important thing is interesting for me these subject. I expect next.
