3/21 Summary (“hypertext: as we may write”)
First we have reviewed last class.
And professor has mentioned about media(two key point) one more time.
1. When Technologies connect or separate people, they become media.
2. Technologies embody social, political, cultural, economic and philosophical ideas and relationships.
We thought what does “digital media” mean. Everything can be media. However we can’t define “digital media” by one sentence. It is very complex and broad so we will think it for one semester.
Following are keypoints.
1. When a medium is new, it is often used to simulate old media.
2. New media do not replace old media, they displace them.
Example of number one is desktop PC. Desk has drawer and folders, files. Desktop PC has also folders, files and we use it’s folders, files drawing as drawer of desk. Therefore we can talk that desktop PC(new) simulate desk(old media).
Displacing of number 2 is different from replacing. Displacing is pursue old thing and place the position.
Next, we learned Tristan Tzara’s recipe for composing a poem. It different from composing a nomal poem in method. Few people put word paper in one box and shake it. Next, a man take out a word one by one and place it in a row. It is poem. Surely shaking box can be changed other method. It does not have a order, sequence. We can watch some movies made by it(cut-ups). Hypertext at www is similar to it. Hypertext’s meaning is too vary, because of various context. Meaning of hypertext is floating, not fixed as cut-ups.
Common technologies of the 1960s are hollerith card, batch processing in 1960s. It is batch processing that main computer process all together. Then, Ivan Sutherland’s MIT Dissertation invented the Sketchpad as today’s touchpad.(1963). Engelbart preview domo given to 1000 at the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco with computers and support staff in Menlo Park.(1968) He showed us standard of mouse, keyboard, workstation, E-mail system. He thought about funding. Therefore he consider that personality and persuasion are very important. We can see it through his reporting style and speculative voice of his demo movie. We should to remember dome, the strongest rhetoric in new media. He established input of human and working of computer.

My opinion
I agree that meaning of “digital media” can’t be defined one sentence. Therefore I expect it to searching. Then one example of media (desk) is help me to understand but below it is not understood to me. I know new media above old media but this concept is not. Therefore I am confusing. Then concept of cut-ups is so interesting. I want make short movie by it. Then I thought of ‘method’ one more time. Invention of Engelbart surprise to me because they are so similar today’s input/output device and system. Therefore I realized importance of concept. It is little abstract, it has made today’s whole computer design.
We will learn Ted nelson., Tim burners-lee. I am looking forward to study their concept next class.
